Amba Pradeep Kulkarni (maiden name Amba PadmanabhaRao Anantpur; more popularly known as Amba Rao -- daughter of A. B. P. Rao -- than Amba Anantpur) was born on 5th March 1961 at Patna (Bihar), India, married to Pradeep Kulkarni and has twin sons Achyut and Kedar. She was brought up in Maharashtra, with her younger siblings Suresh, Meena and Jaya(va)nt. She had her earlier school education in Marathi at Saraswati High School, and later at Siddheswar High school. Though not topper, she always used to be among the first 5 students in the class. She always had good estimate about her performance in the examinations. At the 10th public examination she stood 4th in the Solapur city securing 83% marks(as per her estimate).
In 1970s girls were taking education, and also thinking of carreer. Being in Maharashtra, which is forward in many aspects, was an added advantage. Amba was fortunate to have an educational atmosphere at home. Her mother though herself not educated much, valued education, knew importance of education and hence always encouraged her children (especially daughters) in all possible ways to persue higher education. Her grandmother was a model for Amba, who in 1930s stood 1st and secured a gold medal in the public examination.
She got admission to both Medicine as well as Engineering, but decided to go for higher studies in Mathematics. She did her graduation (B.Sc. in mathematics securing 91% marks -- unprecedential performance in the history of Shivaji University. The second rank holder got only 82% marks. She continued with her higher studies at Shivaji University completing her Masters in mathematics in 1982, with Prof. L Radhakrishna and Prof. Kumbhojkar. 1978-1982 was the golden period of her studentship, during which time she topped in all her endavours - be in studies, music, essay competitions.
In 1979, she got 2nd prize in an Essay competition, organised by TIFR to celebrate the Birth Anniversery of Einstein. She also delivered a talk on All India Radio.
In 1990 she married to Pradeep Kulkarni, who had an untimely death in 2007. He and his parents valued education and supported Amba for her higher studies. He not only supported her but even encouraged her to take up a job of Research Scientist at IIT Kanpur, and to work under Prof. Vineet Chaitanya and Prof. Rajeev Sangal, even though it meant a separation for him from his family. It is only because of in-laws support she could pursue her higher studies M.Tech. (1992-1994) at no less than a premier institute of education in Computer Science in India -- at I.I.T. Kanpur. She got her Ph.D. in 2010 from University of Hyderabad. The degree is in the field of Applied Linguistics, under the guidance of her friend and colleague Prof. G Uma Maheshwar Rao. Recently in 2012 she got her M.A. in Sanskrit from the Karnataka State Open University at Mysore. She was awarded a Vishishta Sanskrit Sevavrati Sammaan by the Rashtriya Sanskrit Sansthan, Delhi in August 2015. On th 10th of Nov the Vice President of India Sri Venkaiah Naidu cites from the book she edited with Prof Gérard Huet and Peter Scharf. at 13.13 here
Recently she was interviewed on Vārtāvalī - a Sanskrit News Bulletin on Doordarshan .
A few years ago she gave an interview to the most popular educational portal
brainbuxa .
