How to install the Devanagari keyboard on my device?

Almost all modern operating systems come with in-built Devanagari keyboards. There is no need to install third-party software for standard keyboard functions. However, the keyboards may need to be enabled in the system settings, which is explained here.

Windows Systems

Windows 10 provides Devanagari Inscript Keyboard for Sanskrit. To enable it, go to Windows SettingsTime and LanguageLanguagePreferred languagesAdd a language, search for Sanskrit and install it.

Windows does not have a phonetic or prediction-based keyboard in-built for Sanskrit. There are many third-party applications like PramukhIME (phonetic, free), BarahaIME (phonetic and a few other layouts, purchase required), Google Input Tools (prediction-based, suitable for simple Sanskrit, desktop version discontinued) to name some popular ones.

Android Devices

Google's Gboard has support for Devanagari input for various languages, including Sanskrit. Go to Languages & Input in System Settings and then to Manage Keyboards. Under Gboard's SettingsLanguages, touch on Add Keyboard. Scroll down or search for Sanskrit (India) and select the language. There are three methods currently available. Add one of the following methods.

  • abc -> संस्कृतम् is a prediction-based phonetic system that enables you to type using English alphabets, and the keyboard driver converts them to Devanagari.
  • Sanskrit keyboard enables you to type in Devanagari characters themselves.
  • Handwriting input enables you to scribble the characters, and the keyboard driver converts them to Devanagari text.

While typing, switch between the input methods by long-pressing the space bar on the keyboard or touching the 🌐 icon.

Understanding Words

When do I use the morphological generator?

If you know the prātipadikam/dhātu and would like to know various forms of it, then you use the morphological generator. See morphological generators page for usage details.

When do I use the morphological analyser?

If you know the word form but do not know the analysis of a word - what is the prātipadikam, what is the vibhakti, or which lakāra is there, which vacanam, which puruṣa, etc., then you use the morphological analyser.

Where can I get the Sanskrit equivalents of morph analysis produced by the Heritage Engine?

The comprehensive mappings among Sanskrit Heritage (SH), Saṃsādhanī (UoH) and other notation schemes are available at Sanskrit Library's Tagset Reference.
